Why Now?

UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland faces significant challenges that threaten our ability to provide specialized care to treat complicated illnesses and health problems. In addition to complying with rigorous state-mandated seismic laws, we are facing a critical shortage of private patient rooms, outdated facilities, and the need to adapt to changing technology. After careful review, we decided to rebuild and modernize some of our facilities – facilities that serve as a vital part of our community’s healthcare services and programs to children.

Our Approach

Over the past three years, UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland has held over 40 community meetings and has actively responded to the needs and concerns of our community. Significant changes were incorporated into the final plan based on the input provided by the community over the course of our visioning and planning process. We have consistently held an open dialogue with our community and will continue to do so over the duration of this project and afterward.

Goals

One of our guiding principles is to minimize disruption to our neighbors. This means maximizing the use of our existing land and buildings in order to minimize neighborhood impacts. We plan to continue the open and honest dialogue we have established with the community and will continue our commitment to being good neighbors as we begin the first phase of construction.
